Imagine two dazzling, identical figures walking into a room, their outfits shimmering with bold colors and their smiles impossible to ignore. They aren’t just artists—they are living art. Meet EVA & ADELE, Germany’s most iconic artistic duo, who have spent over three decades defying gender norms and challenging the boundaries of self-expression. With their striking, identical appearances and their claim of having arrived from the future, EVA & ADELE have redefined what it means to live as art.

Born from a shared vision of transcending societal limits, EVA & ADELE describe themselves as "hermaphrodites of the future," fully embracing gender fluidity. Their paths converged in the late '80s, already united in their commitment to break free from gender binaries long before they met. As EVA puts it, their transgressive spirit began much earlier: “I believe it had already started with our births, our childhoods, our developments.”

Their journey toward living art is one of rebellion, creativity, and passion. When they first joined forces, they didn’t just merge careers—they fused their identities into one. Their fashion, makeup, and skincare routines aren’t just personal choices; they are deliberate, performative acts, transforming their bodies into living canvases that blur the line between art and reality.

In 1989, they created Hellas, a film marking the beginning of their artistic partnership. But it was in 1991, during a performance where they portrayed two brides, that their identities as a unified force in the art world were solidified. From that moment on, EVA & ADELE became inseparable—both in life and in art—challenging every expectation about gender, performance, and identity.

Claiming they traveled to Earth from the future via a time machine, EVA & ADELE arrived in Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, bringing their message of transgression, self-expression, and gender fluidity. Their persona as "hermaphrodites from the future" has since been a cornerstone of their work.

EVA & ADELE’s practice spans a vast array of mediums—from performance art to photography, videography, sculpture, fashion, and graphic design. But perhaps the most iconic aspect of their work is their public persona. Their art doesn’t just exist in galleries; it inhabits the streets, art fairs, and museums—wherever they go, they are their own living work of art.

Their performances are a central part of their artistic identity. EVA & ADELE’s smiling faces have become symbols of positivity, transformation, and rebellion. They believe that by smiling, they share their energy with the world: “We are thankful to every single person who returns our smile! We look and smile at people to transfer our smile to them!” In a world where seriousness is often equated with credibility, EVA & ADELE show that joy and self-expression are the most radical forms of rebellion.

At the heart of EVA & ADELE’s work is a constant challenge to gender norms and expectations. Identifying as transgender artists living as legally married women, their presentation as gender-fluid, ever-evolving beings disrupts traditional ideas of fixed identity. They have made their bodies, their lives, an ongoing performance—one that challenges conventional understandings of gender and sexuality.

Their commitment to gender fluidity and self-expression goes beyond art—it’s about social change. Through their work, they invite the world to rethink how we define identity, reminding us that gender and expression are fluid, personal, and constantly evolving.

For EVA & ADELE, the line between life and art doesn’t exist. Their art is not confined to a canvas or sculpture; it is lived, breathed, and experienced every day. They continue to challenge traditional notions of gender, identity, and sexuality, using their bodies and lives as powerful vehicles for social change.

Their legacy isn’t just about breaking norms; it’s about living authentically and inspiring others to do the same. With a career that spans over three decades, EVA & ADELE remain a vital force in contemporary art, constantly inviting us to question who we are, who we can be, and how we express ourselves.

What’s more radical than living your life as a work of art? EVA & ADELE have made a career out of it, proving that the most revolutionary act is simply being unapologetically yourself. They aren’t just performers; they are living, breathing symbols of freedom, defying every rule that says you can’t be anything you want to be. Through their art and their lives, they show us that the future of identity is limitless—and it’s already here.
