The Brooch That Inspired Ethereal Sculptures

Looking at the intricate styles of Timothy Horn’s pieces, one would think these came from the natural world of coral reefs, the cosmos, or royal jewelry from the Baroque period. However, Horn’s inspiration did not come from grand scales or the vast nature around him. Instead, these gorgeous masterworks came from a more personal and smaller tie—his grandmother’s brooch. At seven years old, this family heirloom was the key to Horn’s artistic inspiration.

Horn would later go on to enlarge the brooch’s intricate details into a variety of shapes and styles that combined the natural world with the aesthetics of the artificial.  This fusion of organic forms with crafted design laid the foundation for his exploration of larger, more complex themes, allowing him to blend his fascination with nature and the universe into a distinct artistic language. Sculpture then became the inspiration by which Horn could express his interest in the cosmos.

Inspired by Saturn, Timothy Horn spun rings into his glass creations. As his delicate glass rings began to take shape, they became not just a study of astronomy but also a visual exploration of life, growth, and connection.

The rings swirled, expanded, and spiraled outward, creating what would become his signature work—an artwork that would grow, reach, and reach... like a tree.

While Timothy’s work initially found root in Australia, the story of his large-scale sculpture Tree of Heaven deserves a much wider international audience. This tree combines the heavens, myths of heritage, and the desire to see the world through a scientific and artistic lens, for in his sculptures, there is something more than just beauty—there is an invitation to see the universe in a new light. A light that was first kindled by a brooch and magnified through the lens of an artist who dared to blow glass into the shape of the cosmos.
